Memory and Performance

It is a common perception that the amount of computer memory affects performance. To a large extend yes, albeit indirectly. This is how it works. When you give the computer instructions, the processor has to locate them on the RAM, which is the memory. If they are not stored in the memory, the processor has to locate them either in the hard disk or other removable disks. The greater the RAM, the easier and faster this process will be. It also enables you to multitask. If however, the RAM is too little and cannot load the program you are commanding it to it will send you an “Insufficient Memory” alert message. The computer creates a virtual memory by creating space using unused files. It creates a swap file in the hard disk where the unused programs are sent. The space they had occupied in the RAM memory is thus freed up.

The process may sound simple, but it actually takes a very long time. That is why you can sit for minutes waiting for a program to load. Upgrading the computer memory is very important as it directly affects performance. An alternative would be to buy a custom USB to increase the storage space.
